Recommended Gear for Discipline Priests in Shadowlands
What is the BIS Discipline Priest gear?
With many different sources of gearing and loot scarcity in Shadowlands, targeting your absolute Best in Slot gear isn't entirely realistic; instead, we've created a Best in Slot list from the ideal Discipline Priest raid drops found in Shadowlands, from Mythic Dungeons, to help you decide what to prioritize.
Disc Priest will primarily focus on maximizing item level in most gear slots, with rings and trinkets. For example, a low-level Crit/Haste ring (desirable Disc stats) can be replaced by a significantly higher item level Vers/Masteryring, especially if it also has a socket.
In this list there are a lot of non-haste items described here. This is because World Boss loot will be about 23 item levels HIGHER than Mythic 0 quality loot. When Mythic+ comes out, you'll more easily be able to focus on dungeon loot to fill out some missing slots.

Trinkets
- Unbound Changeling - Really the easy trinket that you want to focus on acquiring early. It drops from the Mists dungeon and is easy to acquire. The secondary stats it provides will change based on what stat food that you eat.
- Cabalist's Hymnal - Super solid stats and very high ilvl.
- Sinful Gladiator's Insignia of Alacrity - Strong trinket optionfrom pvp.
- Manabound Mirror - Decent healing and very high ilvl from Sire Denathrius
- Darkmoon Deck: Repose - Decent darkmoon deck trinket that is generally easy to acquire early on before raid.
- Wakener's Frond - Stat trinket that can drop from World Quests.
- Stolen Maw Badge- Stat trinket that can drop from World Quests.
Slots to Prioritize in the Great Vault
If you checked the Castle Nathria loot list above, there are a great many of haste-heavy items that feature very high item level from Sire Denathrius and Stone Legion Generals. Outside of those excellent pieces, there are a couple slots that have poor itemization and you can use PvP or the Great Vault to fill in those gaps.
Primary slots to aim for improving from the Great Vault would be:
- Neck
- Wrists
- Gloves
- Boots
Weapons
Currently, there is no major difference between selecting a Main Hand + an Off Hand versus a Staff for Priest. There is potential for Leech/Avoidance/Speed procs on multiple items but generally, you'll want to focus on maximizing item level/spell power gains. When it comes to weapons from the raid. Stone Legion and Sire Denathrius drop their highest respective item level tokens and as a result should be the focus for which tokens to prioritize.
Sire's token will allow you to instantly get the highest item level staff Sinbearer's Absolution Staff which should be your focus.
This guide was written by Buythelight and Mitzki, both priest mains in Method.
Buythelight has been a priest main since starting playing World of Warcraft in Warlords of Draenor, prior to the rework that would become the current iteration of Discipline, he has played Discipline since the Tomb of Sargeras mini-rework
Mitzki has been maining Discipline priest ever since she started raiding Mythic in Emerald Nightmare. In 2017 she applied for a raid spot in the guild that would become Reason and later took the role as healing officer in Battle of Dazar’Alor.
Strengths
- Discipline can cover almost any kind of burst damage and are very adaptable to the encounter, they have options that allow them to burst heal every 45s, 60s and 90s.
- Discipline brings a lot of passive damage for a healer, which helps on tight damage encounters.
- Discipline brings really strong damage reduction and shielding to negate what could have been lethal attacks.
Weaknesses
Disc Priest Trinkets
- Discipline priest has a very proactive playstyle and has limited raid-wide emergency heals in comparison to other healing specialisations.
- Discipline is also a very hard specialisation to master. There is almost always something you can do better and mistakes are very punishing in terms of healing throughput.
What has changed
Best In Slot Disc Priest Trinkets World Of Warcraft
Disc Priest Shadowlands changes
- Smite - has lost its absorb effect.
- Mindblast - has been added to the baseline toolkit for disc. It has a high mana cost, with a decent damage event and an absorb effect.
- Spirit shell - New level 50 talent. Very potent ability currently and will be covered in depth later on.
- Shadow covenant - Reworked, it still has its initial heal, but lost the healing absorb. Shadow Covenant now locks you out of holy abilities instead, and increases your shadow damage done.
- Mind sear - This new baseline toolkit for Discipline gives you a good AoE damage option if your mana can afford it. Important to know is that atonement only heals off the first target hit.
- Power Infusion - A powerful haste buff that can be cast on either yourself or a friendly target.
- Shadow Word: Death - A powerful ability during execute, but with a backlash. It does no atonement healing, but it can be a great help to push some additional damage when there is nothing else to do.
- The Discipline priest playstyle in raid is overall very similar to how it was played in BFA. You just have a few new buttons to press after ramping up to maximize atonement healing.
- In the last few days, Disc priest has seen a 6% decrease in damage done overall, with another 10% taken off Mindgames, putting its spellpower value around 250%. Gameplay-wise, nothing changes; disc is still very strong.
